Satoru Sayama is 45 years into the Tiger Mask persona and 50 years into a life in the ring. The direction he is heading now is unlike anything that came before it.
Where professional wrestling is dynamic and explosive, Sayama is moving towards something quieter - a New Martial Art that blends Japanese tradition with modern cerebral physiology, built around the concept of stillness.
"Japanese culture moves toward the quiet - Stillness," he explained to Pro-Wrestling TODAY. "I am using brain science to see how we can apply this to create strong human beings. There is a way to make fear disappear; it is a state where endorphins are released and you enter a pleasant excitement." The man who once performed Moonsault Presses in an empty dojo without prior practice is now applying that same restless intelligence to the relationship between the mind and the body.
When asked what Tiger Mask means to him at this stage of his life, Sayama reached for a metaphor that captured everything the public never saw. "It is the fans' dream. I use the analogy of synchronized swimming: under the water, I am desperately kicking and flapping my legs. There have been 45 years of that effort, which allows everyone to see 'Tiger Mask.'"
Battling Parkinson's disease and Meniere's disease, Sayama carries the weight of that effort in his body now. The vow he has made to the fans who never stopped believing, however, has not weakened. "I can still show the world how I live. I will show everyone a magnificent Tiger Mask, I will create this New Martial Art, and I will change Japan. I must never betray those expectations."
