Q. Speaking of locations, another place that’s hard to leave out would be Gangbyeon Station and the pojangmacha in front of the terminal. In the pojangmacha scene after they become university students, things like feeding each other danmuji or Tae-seo wiping Eun-ah’s mouth looked so natural and affectionate. The details really felt alive – did you give any direction for that?
“The pojangmacha scene itself was in the script, but things like feeding her danmuji or wiping her mouth were indeed improvised by the actors. I’m also the type who often says, ‘Shall we try this? Shall we try that?’
For example, in the scene where they kiss after drinking wine – there are already so many scenes where people just kiss in a straightforward way, and I thought that even if they were drunk and feeling good, kissing while still not really out of the house yet might feel a bit too much. Since one of them covers the other’s mouth with their hand to tell them to be quiet, I threw out the idea: what if they kissed like that instead?
Then the actors try it once. To be honest, I just throw ideas out there, so I don’t know whether they’ll work until I see them. But the actors pulled it off so adorably.
One thing I’m grateful for in this work is that Tae-seo has left Yeonuri and come to Seoul, while Eun-ah still hasn’t decided on her dream yet. For 20-year-old Eun-ah, being with Tae-seo may have been the only thing in her life that truly sparkled. I think the actors also felt that they didn’t want those moment-by-moment experiences to be treated carelessly or wasted.
To these kids, the pojangmacha in front of the terminal was the only place where they could meet, and I think they instinctively expressed how precious that was. It didn’t just suddenly come out of nowhere – during rehearsals, there were conversations like, ‘Would it be okay to try this?’
Those are really the kinds of actions you can only do if the actor truly cares for the other actor, and the same goes for the characters. I think that underlying feeling was already there in full, and that’s why those moments came out.”

With only four episodes left until the finale and post-production recently completed, director Kim Yoonjin shared in an interview with JoyNews24 the efforts made to faithfully bring the script’s remarkable level of detail to the screen, as well as behind-the-scenes stories about Park Jinyoung and Kim Minju – whom he describes as “good people and good actors”.
Q. Since this is a drama that captures all four seasons, it feels like winter – not just summer – must also have come with a lot of challenges. There was especially that scene with the heavy snowfall – how was that filmed?
“The scene where Tae-seo and Eun-ah go outside and run around after drinking wine was filmed in actual heavy snowfall. For the sequence on the day Tae-seo leaves for the military – when he goes to the bus stop and waits until the bus arrives – there was no snow, so we had help from CG.

There’s an interesting story behind that. That day was actually our final day of filming. It was the absolute deadline – we had to get everything shot by then. I kept delaying filming for as long as possible because I felt that only if we somehow got snow would we get a result we could really feel at ease about. (…)
Then, during the final week of filming, we heard there would be a lot of snow in Gangwon Province. So the day before the shoot, we fixed on a location, went on a location scout, and made all the plans. I went to sleep after hearing the forecast that there would be heavy snow the next day – but at 3am, I got a call from the cinematographer. It wasn’t snowing, it was raining. If it rains, you can’t even use special effects. I thought, ‘We’re done for.’
So at 3.30am, everyone gathered in the cinematographer’s room and discussed what to do. We checked CCTV feeds all across Gangwon Province, and there were two places where it was snowing. We had to decide immediately. We thought, ‘Let’s at least head to one of the places where it’s snowing at 5am,’ and when we checked, it said we’d arrive at 7am. We went there, confirmed that snow was actually falling, and changed the destination for the team departing from Seoul to the Daegwallyeong area.
From 7am onwards, we did a location scout, finished preparations for filming by 9am, and then shot all day. For the daytime scenes, the snow fell intermittently, so we supplemented the snowfall slightly, and at night it was literally a blizzard. In that scene, the two of them are grinning from ear to ear – and that’s because it was the final shoot.”
