A lot of people misinterpret Misato’s motivations and intentions. Misato by definition isn’t a pedophile, but she is a predator. Obviously morally the distinction doesn’t matter, but psychologically it’s important. When she makes a pass at Shinji or kisses him in EOE she’s not doing so because she sexually desires him. The way she has always dealt with her trauma is by drowning it in alcohol and shallow sex. That’s how she deals with her issues, so when she wants to comfort Shinji she can’t be the mother he needs and defaults to the only form of “comfort” she knows. This is also one reason why in Rebuilds she won’t see her son. She knows she’s not cut out to be a mother. Of course I’m not justifying the action, but Evangelion is about hurt people hurting other people, the Hedgehog dilemma. Her intentions were pure but her methods were diabolical.
