Officers expected to find drugs. They weren't prepared to find more than 500 animals. What began as a search warrant targeting a major narcotics investigation quickly became one of the largest animal rescue operations Oklahoma City has ever seen. Investigators recovered roughly 30 pounds of methamphetamine, but the biggest surprise was waiting outside: more than 523 animals, including hundreds of ducks and chickens, dozens of dogs, cats, lizards, a horse, and even peacocks that scattered into nearby woods. Officials said many of the animals appeared to be in relatively good physical condition, but there were simply far too many for one property. Now comes the difficult part. Because the animals are part of an active criminal case, they must remain in legal custody and can't be adopted or transferred until the court process allows it. The sudden influx has pushed local shelter resources to the limit and temporarily disrupted normal intake operations. It's one of those cases where an investigation took an unexpected turn—and left an entire community scrambling to care for hundreds of lives. No one expected the biggest discovery that day to have feathers, paws, and hooves.
