3/4 Two examples discussed by Grace Bungenstab Alves (2025): (1) Vertissolos with Holocene OSL/LOE ages (soil ages ≠ automatic “recent morphogenesis”); (2) the Latossolo–Planossolo transition, reshaping water pathways, landforms, and vegetation mosaics.

1/4 Why are Latossolos (Ferralsols) found in Brazil’s Northeast semiarid region? Where drought, strong seasonality, and shallow soils are common? 🧵

The study explores how OSL ages in Vertisols from the Rio do Peixe Basin (PB, Brazil) reflect not only deposition, but strong pedogenetic processes like pedoturbation. Analyses included grain size, micromorphology and weathering indices.

🔬 The @colapsoggf joined #NWLDW2025 at USP (São Paulo) to present the study: “Decoding luminescence ages through pedogenesis: Vertisols in a semiarid sedimentary basin” 📍 Work led by Amanda D. dos Reis & Matheus S. S. Figueiredo, advised by Grace B. Alves.

The study also raises a provocative hypothesis: Could this site be a southern expression of muçununga formations, previously known only from coastal Bahia and Espírito Santo?

Why do forests fail to reclaim some open patches in the Atlantic Rainforest? In São Paulo’s Serra do Mar, the Campo do Veludo remains a persistent grass-shrub enclave. A new study by @colapsoggf investigates this pedogeographic puzzle. 🧵
