From my previous tweet I've gained a few new followers, so I thought I might introduce myself! I'm Grace, the newest @EHUNineteen PhD researcher. I'm looking at the impact of new technologies on building and maintaining friendships/communities at a distance in the late 19th C.

@19thcenturyem Oh my god, can we both submit our MA dissertations as our job applications? 😂

@Pixel_8 In their biscuit challenge I would have definitely made a stage and little James in his clown costume 😂 Thankfully he didn't bend his knees in his act, so the biscuit performance would be historically accurate 😂

I've gone down a bit of a rabbit hole. I've found exactly where on Tithebarn Road the bakery was, where it's owner Henry Norman Outram lived, and whittled Mr Long down to either Albert Long or Alfred Henry Long. Both of whom lived within a stone's throw of the bakery!

It's not everyday a soggy invoice from 1915 blows onto your balcony. Of course I rescued it, it's old and I can't help it.

@grimshaw_garry I've currently been digging around in Findmypast! I have two potential Mr Longs, both of which lived at opposite ends of the bakery's road. I've also found the bakery owner 😊

@19thcenturyem The only way it could have been more on brand was if there was some Ally Sloper reference 😂

I don't check Twitter much anymore, which is a shame given the lovely people I connected with before this app went off the deep end. Just a reminder you can follow me on Instagram at the same username @gracefmarks It's much nicer over there! And you can see my greyhounds 🩵

Had a great time presenting at my first conference today! Was such a confidence boost, in a really friendly & relaxed environment. It was also great to hear papers from my fellow PGRs! Big thanks to @GraceFMarks for the pics & being my fellow humanities pal in a sea of STEM!

Something different (ish) for today - my blog for menstrual hygiene day! I'm usually either talking about Jane Austen or endometriosis, so here I am yapping about periods and the taboo/stigma that definitely shouldn't be attached! 👇 @edgehillsu edgehillsu.org.uk/articles/menst…

I had a dream that a student asked me for assignment help on a module I don't teach. I fumbled the answer and woke up in a panic because I'd told them the wrong thing... Does this mean I'm a proper academic now?

I've been working on a monstrous literature review for the past few months and today I finally (mostly) finished it, and I even managed to add in some primary analysis! 6000 words this morning to 13,000 now 😅 Time for a sigh of relief and a celebratory hot chocolate 🥳

Inside is also different! With the engraving "Presented by Sloper" rather than "Ally Sloper's Half-Holiday". Perhaps when removing the paper's name from the face, they decided to engrave it on the inside instead. Either way, this will be great to explore in more depth in my PhD!

On the bigger watch, the clock face is customised with "Ally Sloper's Half-Holiday", whereas the smaller one is not. I suspect this watch is an earlier model, with both the size and face changing later on to reduce the cost of producing them

I saw an Ally Sloper Pocket Watch being sold for an affordable price the other day and bought it immediately. It arrived this afternoon, and comparing it to my first watch has been fascinating! Unwrapping it, I knew it was bigger, but by how much is so intriguing!
