I’m curious if public opinion sees Trump as a first-term president or a second-term one. Second-term ones tend to be given less of the benefit of the doubt, fatigue with their tenure increases, etc. My inclination is that it’ll be the latter, but idk, hasn’t happened since… 1892

@Autarkh @dcg1114 Will the justice system let him do a lot of stuff we think is unimaginable. Yes. That we have to live with it is beyond horrific. Do I honestly think that they will allow him to suspend elections or become POTUS for life? 95% not likely. But it shouldn’t be a question at all.

@Autarkh @dcg1114 Don’t get me wrong, Trump is no Bush. I couldn’t stand Dubya, but I wasn’t worried about deportation camps, gutting the civil service, politicizing the Justice Department and more. Trump is scary as hell and we have every right to have existential dread.

I was pretty devastated Tuesday night. But the fact that we have only lost 1 battleground Senate seat and will not lose ground in the House makes it harder to conclude that this election was some irreversible re-alignment. This is not 1980.

@MarcACaputo The post-Tea Party GOP isn't interested in passing any bills that they can't do via reconciliation so its a useful weapon for them when the Dems are eventually back in the majority. They will never kill it until they reconsitut into a party that wants to pass actual legislation.

@Autarkh @dcg1114 Dems have some hard truths to figure out, but it only feels existential because of the unique danger of Trump and not the electoral landscape, which is complex but I believe we can tackle just as quick as '08 when the GOP inevitably oversteps and swing voters instictively repulse

@Autarkh @dcg1114 Election day/night felt like 2004 - the aftermath of 2004 was that we were told we lived in GOP Permanent Majority, that Clinton only won because of Perot, and that liberals were in the wilderness for a generation.
