In last night's ballot, formerly Liberal-voting South Australians have more or less simply switched their vote from the Liberal Party to One Nation. That's not so much a fracturing of the right, as looking for differentiation. Now you have people who want more say in the way politics is done lining up against those who think they've got about the right amount. The small number of voters who switched their vote from Labor to One Nation confirms that theory - these aren't people switching their entire world view, as people sick of not being heard. Both major parties have come to be seen as making decisions to benefit themselves instead of the nation. The Labor Party will keep losing votes to One Nation as long as they keep on doing what they're doing. The Liberals will only be an effective challenger brand (which is what they now are) when (and if) they are able to demonstrate to the electorate that they are more effective at giving people more of a say. People are increasingly deciding that they want genuine representatives, not politicians who take care of the politics first.

@themetresgained @parnellpalme @jamesphilips88 Maybe I was too harsh. But it's part of this attempt to discredit the Community Independents Project due to its threat to the Liberal Party. And the desire to reduce politics to simplistic categories.

@JasonArnol20410 @Ben_Davison1 Votes will eventually flow to the two parties with the most votes as that is what the system asks you to consider. It asks people to weigh options and think about what they would like even if they can't have their first 10 choices. It builds consensus, which may take 10 rounds.

@grantwyeth @Ben_Davison1 Proportional representation sounds great. Someone voting, say an Independent, as 1, then put Labor 10 and/or Liberal 11, and putting eight other choices before 10 and 11, then their vote ending up with Labor or Liberal is bullshit

MOST AUSTRALIANS DO NOT WANT ONE NATION IN POWER South Australia shows us that even those who “don’t want Labor” would still rather Labor than One Nation or The Liberals Australia is not into bi-polar extremes, we are actually very constructive and collaborative in our politics
Dan Renwick@DRRenwick

@Ben_Davison1 The funny thing is that the Labor domination of Australian politics is flying under the radar because reporters think that Labor is boring. You'd barely know that SA Labor had its greatest ever victory because reporters are fascinated by one or two seat One Nation.

@JasonArnol20410 @Ben_Davison1 Well if those to parties are the last two in the run off then preferences will flow to them. This is how building a consensus works. It's how adulthood works. FPTP is an anti-democratic system for imbeciles. If you want to advocate for proportional representation you should.

@grantwyeth @Ben_Davison1 I’ve done booth counting, back at Federal election 2022. There were 11 candidates, many people put Labor and Liberal 10th and 11th, but if they voted elsewhere there 2PP ended up with Liberal or Labor, even though they were 10th and 11th choice out of 11. Great fkng system

@JasonArnol20410 @Ben_Davison1 Except in Australia you get to pick who you PREFER to be in power. That's what the voting system is – the ability to make adult compromises. Not sooking that your favourite team didn't win. The Australian public clearly PREFER Labor.

@Ben_Davison1 Most Australians don’t want Labor in power either, based on first preference votes. Undebatable

With the very high vote for One Nation last night, this essay explains the tensions between cultural identity and the state's structural calculations. The security and prosperity of the country are low priorities. Link in reply x.com/grantwyeth/sta…

My latest essay on the emerging political order, where the interests of states and the feelings of cultural nationalists are diverging. Creating greater internal instability. Link in next reply.

If you want to know what happened last night in South Australia with the surge in votes for One Nation, this essay explains the different perspectives that are driving those who prioritise cultural identity away from the necessary functions of the state. grantwyeth.com/p/nations-agai…

@parnellpalme @jamesphilips88 Oh come on, Parnell. "off-brand Labor". This is the kind of analysis from someone who's never read a sentence of political philosophy in their life. If you don't understand the difference between liberalism and social democracy then you have a very shallow understanding of ideas.

The teals are already a form of populist party. They're essentially the off-brand version of Labor, which people can vote for when they want to feel more independent (or when Labor isn't putting up a candidate). The Liberals didn't understand the dynamic and create their own off-brand version, so the voters who would have, have switched to One Nation.

@MurrayWatt I thought the Liberals and The Nationals were back on the same page, they are not even reading the same book according to this.

The Liberals aren’t just putting One Nation ahead of Labor on their Sth Aus how to vote cards. They’re even putting them ahead of the Nationals. Any seats One Nation wins tonight will be on the back of this dodgy Liberal preference deal.
