It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the devastating wildfires that have swept through the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma, impacting many landowners, including some of our regenerative ranching partners.

It’s not always wise to think long term. Sometimes the curse of long-term thinking is that nothing gets done in the short-term. Often you can achieve more, and learn more, from immediate action than working on big plans. The carbon credit business is a good example of long-term thinking preventing short-term wins. Many purists demand permanence on a 1000 year scale. Solutions like Direct Air Capture could potentially meet that need, but with uneconomic costs (~$500 a ton) and an inefficient process (it takes a lot of energy to suck carbon from the air). Nature based solutions - like regenerative grazing - can sequester carbon at low cost, immediately and ongoing. But it is impossible to guarantee 1000 year permanence with land. Surely it would be common sense, if we imminently want to remove carbon from the atmosphere, to do everything we can? The enemy of the good should not be the perfect. In crisis-mode, we should do EVERYTHING. On a positive note, sentiment does seem to be shifting, since the supply of 1000-year credits just isn’t available. Thank you Mr Market. Microsoft has signed a 30-year offtake agreement with US-based soil carbon measurement firm @grassrootscarbn for an undisclosed amount of carbon removal credits from grasslands in the US. The deal will support ranchers to implement regenerative land management practices. Currently, 41% of US grassland is used for livestock grazing, with the capacity to sequester over 500m tonnes of CO2/year. However, 95% of that grassland is managed conventionally, depleting soil carbon prnewswire.com/news-releases/…

🐄 Over 350 million acres are dedicated to livestock grazing in the U.S. < 5% is managed regeneratively. Our goal is to increase that by working with ranchers with financial incentives, education, and support.
