I was incredibly fucking wrong, it’s not terrible. is it now my favorite? No. Do I think it’s better than Rust In Peace And Reign In Blood? No. But I actually enjoyed it, The first two songs I didn’t like, but after that it was pretty god damn good. 8/10

hear me out: compare "Wax Mask" to "The Weeping Vessel": the latter just sounds so colossal, so feral, such driving groove. it's heavy and mean and desolate. granted, Zao has always had the stronger discography, but PTW did do TOOD and TFTR, and that's a A LOT.

not every classic metalcore band can have a great comeback. it's a passionate style that youth gets, and "mature sounds" are often just jaded stabs at relevance. Zao's comeback album was incredible, for example, but this new PTW bores me. There's no momentum, it plods.

What Herbert and Villeneuve intended with their work is irrelevant because that's not what their work said. Authorial intent has limits when the text is finally presented. Don't write a hero then say, "Actually he's the villain." It doesn't work that way.
