Helicopter scenes. 1985-2015. The first time I was on a helicopter was along the HK-China border, in 1985, in a British Army Scout (see second slide). Over the years helicopter flights became not exactly routine but definitely an option -depending where you were going, or who let you tag along, or who had the budget for it. In the mid 90s in Hong Kong it cost around USD 2000 an hour to hire a helicopter, a Bell Ranger (no idea what it costs now in HK or anywhere. This was long before drones were an option). Flying from the helipad on the harbour in Central you could see a lot of the territory in an hour. Out comes your credit card at the end of the flight and it goes on the expenses for the assignment, a dollar number which was vastly greater than your fee, and which kept you constantly juggling. On the helicopter it was usually just me and the pilot, but if there was time I’d invite a friend along for the ride. The door on the right side would be removed for an unobstructed view. Nice way to spend an hour above HK on a clear day. 1. “Slayer”. Camp Humphreys, Korea. 2015. 2. Shenzhen River separating Hong Kong and mainland China. 1985. 3. Exercises off Sattahip Thailand. 2008. 4. Andersen Air Base, Guam. 2008.

If you need a roof over your head and you don’t have much money they were ok. These days things have changed though. In the city I live (Vancouver) many of these hotels are now run by social service organizations for people on social assistance. And in those it’s no longer possible to walk in off the street and rent a room for a night or a week. But some must still exist I imagine. And on the edge of the city there are motels, but it’s a different experience than staying in a cheap hotel.

Hotel scenes around town. 1973-1980. In high school on weekends I sometimes checked into a cheap hotel to photograph downtown. This was the early 1970s. Later I’d end up living at the Lotus Hotel and driving a taxi. In 1978 if you walked in off the street and asked for a room you could get one for $42 a week. From “Under Vancouver 1972-1982”. Books available via link in bio. greggirardpictures.com 1. Rialto Hotel and The Barn Cabaret. 1975. 2. Lotus Hotel with Japanese magazine. 1982. 3. Granville Hotel, 1974. 4. Gresham Hotel, 1973.
