dear reader, I am writing to say that after almost ten years, I am leaving MUNDIAL. fleeing the nest, breaking out of the zoo, saying goodnight and sleep very tight. but sometimes, you just godda go. i’m very proud of MUNDIAL and also, if it’s ok to be proud of yourself, proud of myself. editor in chief, seven cover stories, features about everything from maradona to cornish fishermen, trolls in the chatboxes to zizou playing at school. making audio docs about east berlin, doing a podcast that should still be going, making films about people who play five hours a day to making our very own PUMA king. these were the days, my friend. awards! we won awards! i would like to say some serious thanks to some not often serious people. maybe it can all be joke, joke, joke. dan and seb, thanks for coming up to a gobby little prick who stood on stage yelling about the pros of buying a poetry magazine because it cost less than a pint. it’s forever appreciated that you took a punt on me. owen, thanks for pushing me, pissing me off, making my writing a million times better, and for trusting me with doing a cover story about your hero. alex, thanks for making even the shoddiest copy look very beautiful. sam, thanks for both physically and mentally fighting me over a number of years in a way that was, potentially, net positive for both of us. i will see you out there. dave, you are one clean son of a gun. james wright, you’re the funniest and best writer out of the lot of us, don’t ever forget that. sifaeli, live forever young buck. asad, for your intelligence, your humour, and for actually wanting to be at The Fence. matthew, you will run rings around the lot of us, unfortunately. allez, mon frere. kirker, hats off for striding in, putting us in our place, and making some brilliant things happen. to everyone who trusted me to work with them on their story, to every writer, photographer, illustrator that I commissioned, to anyone who ever bought the magazine, wore the hoody, listened to what we had to say. thank you. sorry if I haven’t replied to an email from you recently, lots going on. peace and love. hit me up if you’d like to work on something together.
