I now have my genomics-driven treatment plan fully implemented after suffering severe neuroimmune and neurometabolic dysfunction following a cytokine storm in 2021. After that incident, I gained 50 pounds, experienced amenorrhea, had four hospitalizations to different service lines, recieved one endovascular stent, and had many ED trips for troponin testing and migraine cocktails. I had been told, "You must have a tumor in your pituary, your adrenal glands, etc.," but I was also told, "We can't find anything wrong with you." I was then informed that I had a condition that has no FDA-approved treatment that leads young adults to seek medically-assisted dying (i.e., ME/CFS). There were days I was too sick to get out of bed to eat or take my medications. I would experience concussive-like symptoms trying to watch anything on a screen. I could not sit up for longer than 20 minutes because I could not get blood to my brain. I could not think.
I never gave up on myself and I never stopped searching for answers.
I am starting to feel like myself again, but actually, I am starting to feel healthy for the first time in my life. I had been in a state of grief trying to become the person I once was and the person I never had the chance to be because the healthcare system never understood me.
I really do believe that COVID is an epigenetic trigger that causes genes to be up or downregulated. This makes precision medicine even more important.
It's not about targeting a biomarker but restoring faulty processes that cut across organ systems.
Thinking differently got me a different outcome—a better one.
Things that helped me: Learning more about methylation, oxidative stress/glutathione, glutamate/GABA imbalances, histamine, endothelial damage, endocannabinoid system (don't need cannabis to address), mast cell involvement in the CNS, the glympathic system, and the extraceullar matrix.
What you can do to support better outcomes:
1.) Advocate for affordable access (i.e. insurance coverage) to genomics testing.
2.) Support research, education and training on these system drivers.
3.) Advocate for affordability and availability of high quality/bioavailable supplements, medications and manual therapies to optimize these systems.
