Sitting on a park bench somewhere behind the (former) Iron Curtain, trying to blend in, waiting for goodness knows what. Gosh it takes me back.

@thyphoidjack Working conditions mines were terrible - in aftermath contract method of working replaced with salaried posts and safer working conditions so in the end positive outcome for mine workers.

In March 1922, South African communists attempted to revolt against the government of Jan Smuts in the Witwatersrand region (Gauteng). They were fighting under the slogan 'Workers of the World, Unite and fight for a white South Africa.

Between 10-12 September 1943, in Milan, the Hotel Regina was occupied by the Waffen SS – Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler. On September 13 it was surrounded by barbed wire, with casemates made of reinforced concrete and illuminated at night by powerful spotlights.

It's not the Parachuting that makes the Parachute Regiment, it's the mindset. We win, as @3Cdo_Bde observed, during the Falklands Campaign, with 2 Para taking first blood on land at Goose Green, and 3 Para leading the way from San Carlos to Port Stanley, and then 2 and 3 Para, entering Port Stanley and hoisting both regimental flag and the Union Jack.  I'm sure the Royal Marines appreciated the warm welcome from the Parachute Regiment when they eventually arrived in Port Stanley to hoist the flag at Government House on the 16th June 1982. 😉 #ShotsFired

Here is a modern explorer at the artic. A machine, man made clothing and science as the purpose. If you were required to fund one of the great three, who would it be, and in truth, who had the greatest legacy for those that followed? I know my answer.

And the last was Scott, he pioneered the use of the motorised sled engine then the dog, the pursuit of science as a purpose for exploration, the use of man made clothing, industry, science, exploration. A modern man, a futurist.

I bought a book, “Finding endurance”. The discovery of a ship called Endurance, trapped in the ice 1915, the vessel belonged to one of three famous Antartic explorers, Shackleton. At the book promotion in Simons Town, they asked, who did we back, Shackleton or Scott?

@FXMC1957 Had a good Boer war. Magersfontein 1899, Paardeberg Feb 1900, Tugela Heights Feb 1900 and Berg en Dal Aug 1900 showed light on coming 1916 tactical requirements. Not learned as well as could have been as Boer guerrilla campaign skewed war lessons.

29 January 1928. Field Marshal Douglas Haig, British commander during the Battle of the Somme, died (aged 66). Historians were originally scathing about his role in the First World War, but more recent studies, most notably, by Gary Sheffield have taken a more sympathetic view.

@barrybateman @GTalevi @DadaMorero @CityofJoburgZA Two ways - Bite and hold or blockhouse line strategy - choose areas and bit by bit recover them - from outside inwards or divide the ruin into segments by bisecting it and then keep ruducing the segmented areas until the gaps between lines disappear

@GTalevi @DadaMorero @JHBWater @CityofJoburgZA We don’t come to Jhb often, but today we’re in the CBD for a court hearing. This city is a dump. It is gone. The roads are crumbling, lights out, leaking water, filthy streets, decrepit buildings. How do you come back from this? Is it even possible?

@RestIsPolitics Not a @campbellclaret fan but 100% support his position on this - those young men and woman who served - some of whom were killed or terribly injured - are the equal of their WW1 and WW2 forefathers. Article 5 was called and answered. End of.

@4HLsartorialist The battle against the enemy and the battle for power within the command structure - found it captivating - its boredom - pettiness - its waste - exhilaration - action adrenaline - and silly bits - overall - I was stunned by it.
