Launching another big update: team Draft Rooms. For each NBA team, we track each projected pick across 5 major mock drafts (@Sam_Vecenie @AdamFinkelstein etc). Then we have full games featuring the players in that team's range matched up against each other. Plus workout news!

@WesleyR32555961 @EricSperlazza13 I think all these fears around Acuff are more than reasonable, I just see a star on offense and I can't really unsee it. Might well be wrong, it certainly wouldn't be the first time. He just has the it factor for me.

@grinding_tape @EricSperlazza13 I’m scared with his passing actually I’m not sure It will translate how people think Everything HAS to run through him to unlock that part of his game which just won’t happen in the NBA Basically opposite of Flemings playmaking

This is where I eventually landed with Acuff as well, even after having him above Flemings before. I’m still a bit lower on Burries compared to the rest, but even he provides so many other ancillary skills to fall back on If Acuff isn’t a 40% shooter, how does he help you win?
Jack Dann@JackBDann

Want a heliocentric shooter? Take Wagler. Want to take an upside swing? Take Brown Want a guaranteed impact player? Take Flemings Want a mixture of all the above? Take Philon or Burries

@mrclarkinc @Joissbert @AndyKHLiu He's not the pick I would make. Who do you like in that spot? Of the players likely to be available, I'm highest on Burries, Mara, Morez, and Philon. No particular order, I love all of them, as prospects and specifically for the W's.

@grinding_tape @Joissbert @AndyKHLiu Exactly. His floor is solid. Gonna be in a rotation. But man, to walk away from a make or break draft with a guy who’s ceiling is that low… Brutal

@mrclarkinc @Joissbert @AndyKHLiu I think Yaxel has a chance to be very good, but by far the most likely outcome for him is an MLE-level player. That would have been great for the Warriors in 2022 and it would be great for the Thunder now, but I'm not sure it makes much sense for the 2026 W's.

@grinding_tape @Joissbert @AndyKHLiu These guys go 20-45. Fans always overreact to older prospects. In this era 24 is insane. Literally the only prospect I could find in this era that was drafted at 24 years old and reached a pretty high peak was Brogdon. He was taken in the 2nd round. Reaves is close & undrafted

@mrclarkinc @aryh21 I think the bigger issue is that he's not necessarily a defensive four either. Sorry to repeat myself but put aside the highlight blocks and watch 1:1 and there's a lot of this: x.com/grinding_tape/…
Grinding Tape@grinding_tape

@AndyKHLiu @mrclarkinc He's good but not as great as advertised defensively. If you watch full games you see highlight plays but also a lot of plays like this: grindingtape.com/playlist?only=… This is from only 3 games...

@aryh21 He’s gonna be like a 3-4 attempt guy at 35-38%. That’s really not a stretch 4. Maybe in a couple years he gets the volume there because he is a good FT shooter which usually translates to good 3 PT shooting. But it’s a big maybe. He’s not a natural knock down guy.

@mrclarkinc @Joissbert @AndyKHLiu I agree, I'm with you. It's not that he's a bad prospect but the "he'd be top-5 if he were 20 stuff" is really silly. He's not 20. He looks amazing against college kids because he is dominating them physically, but he won't be physically dominant in the NBA.

@Joissbert @AndyKHLiu Dog, his play at 24 years old vs 18-19 year old kids has to be discounted. Most of what makes him special in college (size & strength) will be negated in the NBA. He‘s a very mid prospect with the upside to be an above avg role player.

@mrclarkinc you might be right on the pick him in the 20s. think he's way better defensively and much less offensively though

@EricSperlazza13 @CanyonDriver I would personally rather have peak Zach LaVine than current Cason Wallace. Depends on the situation, but easier to find Wallaces I think, and their pay reflects that. Reasonable minds can disagree.

@grinding_tape @CanyonDriver Right, but would you rather have Zach LaVine’s impact on winning or someone like Cason Wallace? This is all hyperbole and I totally see where you’re coming from, just a lot of pitfalls with a one-way guard. Especially it you’re a team that really needs to build methodically

@kyleguyenjoyer @EricSperlazza13 If Acuff reverts to high school shooting level he's in trouble, that's definitely true. His form is excellent so I'm not that worried about it, but it's for sure a failure mode. Not sure how much teams can do to push on this.

@grinding_tape @EricSperlazza13 I don’t know, lots of these are credit to coach cal. He makes them look very good. Also Acuff high school shooting percentage is very bad. Doubt he’ll shoot 40% from 3 like Kon Nippler

@grinding_tape @CanyonDriver If the offense translates there’s definitely an easy path to being an AS, but if his defense doesn’t drastically improve I have a hard time believing he’ll be good enough offensively to make up for it I think about the Zach LaVine paradox a lot with Acuff

This is a draft that's full of talent, but I think if I had to pick one guy that's likely to dramatically outplay his draft slot, it's Morez. That motor just gives him so much leeway to stay on the court while he fleshes out his game. I hope it happens, because I love watching him play.

Is Morez going to develop into a real scorer, or at least a floor-stretching big? I don't know, and I don't think that's knowable right now. But what we know is that a) he should be able to stay on the floor, and b) he has a track record of immense year-over-year improvement. That makes his development a very good bet for me, though still a bet.

This thread is about his motor so I'm not going to get too deep on offense, but aside from the 12/35 from 3 last year, he shot 78% from the line. There are signs of touch. Occasionally Morez does something like this:

I feel strongly that Morez' motor is going to get him on the court for almost any NBA coach on Day 1. He does all the dirty work you want your backup big to do, and he does it at a very high level. So he's going to get minutes and he's going to have a runway to develop. That's important, because there is more upside here.

This is a video I've wanted to make for a long time: 3 straight minutes of Morez Johnson hustle plays. No post ups, no fancy dunks. Just boundless, relentless motor. I really can't emphasize enough how much I love watching Morez compete. More thoughts in thread.
