@whatismusicpod I agree that the front of the album is pretty great, up until Beautiful, then it all goes a bit stodgy. Apologist, Air and Unafraid are 3 songs mostly doing the same vibe thing and don't sit well so close together. Professor I like but don't think it's served well where it is

@whatismusicpod I just have 2 years worth of patron episodes to catch up on by Nov 7th now! Don't want to start the new season and not know who any of the characters are and what the big cliffhangers from last season are which are getting resolved

@whatismusicpod Well this happened. There goes the coffee fund (I don't drink coffee so there should be loads of money in it)

@whatismusicpod I have a huge amount of love it. Lots of great tracks, lots of experimentation and I'd say their most 'successful' album at a moment of confusion. Possibly the last time they really shot for doing something challenging (or maybe just the last time I liked them going for it)

On Monday we begin our deep-dive into UP, the eleventh R.E.M. album, and first without Bill Berry. But what do YOU think of the album? Bold reinvention, or confusing mess? Beautiful or abstract? Do you love it? Favourite tracks? When did you first hear it? Tell us everything!

@johnhunter38655 I'm sure you're not worried but the 'collective opinion' probably disagrees with you on later period. I was mostly only aware of the singles after Shoulder but there were absolutely some great songs in that period still. Thumbs aloft for interband rivalry too

@johnhunter38655 I'd agree with that but I think there's something to be said for the restrictions/challenges that Noel had to work under in oasis mk1 and how it pushed him on. I think Noel work best when he does have something to push against/work out (AA album cough cough)

@whatismusicpod Good selection of tracks, loving the whiplash of Leave into Shiny Happy People. Personally would love Undertow in there and I also have a crazy love of Belong. There's little 'song' but I can't get enough of that harmony chorus

@whatismusicpod Great ep! Is St. Eve an option? Loved listening to Ethan. His answer to 'What is music?' was perfect, providing an answer that encapsulated both Adam and Lucas and thus by covering both sides, also Steve. Is Michael trying to use AI to finish his album?

@whatismusicpod Considering the intro I feel this episode should have the sub headline of "tempting fate". Great fun ep and I sincerely hope Adam is deep into email negotiations with Lucas having provided him with "Adam Scott's" email address.

@whatismusicpod I love bands that keep the creative process going as best they can. New adventures, radiohead demoing and recording on the road after okc is just another reason why I love them both

R.E.M. recorded the majority of NEW ADVENTURES IN HI-FI whilst on the road in 1995, recording in soundchecks, dressing rooms, and in front of the audience. It gives the album a special feeling. Hear more about this process on this week's episode of our podcast! #remband

@whatismusicpod In reference to Be Mine you could argue that High n Dry has some similarities musically with the guitar voicing (I'm sure Thom would say BM was a better song though). With new songs at the time I think there's a bit of cross pollination with I Promise too

@whatismusicpod A great episode. Good to call out the radiohead comparisons, I never really thought about it at the time but it's interesting the possible bleed hifi and up had on thom's thinking. No doubt rh would've influenced them too with what they were working on at the same time

@whatismusicpod Interesting story, whilst they were recording this song James was organising Nicky's collection of detective novels. He wasn't sure where the Colin Dexter books were going so Nicky said "Morse there". Sean misheard and that's how this drum track was born

A new Manic Street Preachers song is upon us! Unfortunately, we are unable to BONG this, but hopefully we will when a bit more is known about the album. So for now... talk to us here! What do you think? Initial reactions? Does it bode well for the album? Speak! #manics

@adamglasspool A bit silly, a bit of ABBA, a bit throwaway. Also sounds like Sean forgot to pack half his drumkit for the session, couldn't be bothered to head home and just thought he could cover all the fills with what he had.

I have to imagine that the reason we didn't get a Nicky Wire soundbite on the musical direction for this, is that it would've been "sounds like Manic Street Preachers played by Manic Street Preachers." Everyone knows the second single is where it's at though... 🤞
