My friend David Boling (we're both USTR alumni) and I are quoted in this NYT article by River Akira Davis reporting on the conclusion of the US-Japan trade negotiations: nytimes.com/2025/07/23/bus…

In a New York Times interview, I explained that the Ishiba government had seriously underestimated Trump's continuing obsession with Japan, which was formed during Japan's "bubble" period in the 1980s and has been seared into his "retribution" memory: nytimes.com/2025/07/08/bus…

On Nihon TV's "Shinso News," I accurately predicted that (1) Trump would not make excessive demands before the 7/20 elections (25% tariffs rather than the 30-35% he alluded to before) and (2) the "real" negotiations will take place between 7/20 and 8/1. bs4.jp/shinsou/

Dinner with Hillary Clinton in DC on 4/23. First met her at the Little Rock Economic Summit in 12/92 and served on her Asia Policy Working Group in 2016. She continues to advocate for children, women, civil rights, human rights, and peace, and is an inspiration to us all.

Dinner with Bill Clinton in DC on 4/23. Spoke at the Little Rock Economic Summit in 12/92 and invited to be his Assistant Secretary of Commerce in 1/93. I declined, and Chuck Meissner, who took the job, was in the plane with Secretary Ron Brown that crashed in Croatia in 4/96!

Chaired a fundraiser tonight in Washington, DC for Senator Andy Kim (D-New Jersey), fellow alumnus of Deep Springs College, the unique 25-student college I attended in the late 1960s and Andy attended in the early 2000s. Happy to share with him a commitment to public service.

Leaving Japan (sadly), I'm worried about my cello. When I checked in for the flight over here, it weighed almost 8 kilos. Today at departures, the machine gave it as 7.5! I suppose it's all that light, healthy Japanese food...

@StevenIsserlis One of my very favorite pieces, with the Casals/Szell recording from the 1930s setting the standard!

Almost halfway through my 9 performances of the Dvorak concerto (4 different orchestras/conductors). I've been playing it for so long - but I just love it more and more. A profound emotional journey - heroic, poetic, joyous, tragic; it has everything! And it's chamber music...

@StevenIsserlis One of my favorite conductors. Two memorable performances I attended were Abbado and Murray Perahia performing the Beethoven Piano Concerto #5 (1991) and Abbado and Victoria Mullova performing the Brahms Violin Concerto (1992) both at Suntory Hall in Tokyo

The great Claudio Abbado b otd 1933: "My grandfather used to take me for walks, and he didn't say very much. I learned from him to listen to silence. And for me, listening is the most important thing: to listen to each other, to listen to what people say, to listen to music."
