With just a few legislative days remaining, companion solar moratoria bills in the Alabama House and Senate are advancing quickly. HB 617 and SB 354, in their current form, would impose a one-year freeze on utility-scale solar projects across Alabama, a move with significant implications for energy investment and development statewide. GSREIA is actively engaged as the legislature returns from recess next week, with momentum building and little time left to influence the outcome. It was announced this week that the new Amazon Data Center coming to Northwest Louisiana includes a deal with Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) to pay for “energy infrastructure and upgrades required to serve the data centers, which also strengthens overall grid reliability." Amazon has also invested in solar energy projects that will bringing up to 200 megawatts of carbon-free energy onto Louisiana's grid. Amazon is also pledging to use “only verified surplus water,” water deemed unneeded by the community. GSREIA member companies were on hand for the ribbon cutting of the new Together Louisiana community lighthouses in Baton Rouge. As Senate President Pro Tem Regina Barrow explains, with proper funding, the expansion of the Together Louisiana program from New Orleans to Baton Rouge will continue statewide and eventually nationally. Community lighthouses keep people safe, cool, and dry during extreme weather in locations already central to communities - houses of faith. Power Grab: Legislation introduced Thursday, Feb. 5, would eliminate voters’ ability to elect the Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC).
