Along the steep terraces carved into the northern edge of Lombardy, vines cling to slopes that tilt at dizzying 60 percent grades, a landscape of "superheroic" viticulture, Senior Editor Aldo Fiordelli says. Here, among the estates of iconic producers like Nino Negri and Arpepe, the dramatic terroir gives the local nebbiolo (called chiavennasca) a bright, savory, and taut character with alpine crunchiness.
