The Hindu Right and BJP govt should stop talking this nonsense that India was already a democracy 5000 years ago. Democracy is necessarily a product of Western enlightenment. It can't be invented in ancient India.
So far as some kind of public participation in governance is concerned, that existed in ancient Greece, Ancient Roman Empire and ancient India around the same time but these were not democracy as they excluded the entire public except handful of elite males.
