@BigG95938 @TracesofTexas Slavery is wrong, but was very much in play in the economy of north America at the time. To ignore this, and how it affected the decisions of Travis, Austin, and the others at the Alamo is disingenuous.

@BigG95938 @TracesofTexas There were great fortunes being made in the south, because of the value of cotton that required slaves to be competitive. The Mexican revolution, outlawed slavery possible for the American settlers in Texas to compete. I think ignoring economic reasons for the conflict is wrong.

The not-so-arcane Texas Fact of the Day: It was 187 years ago today, on Feb. 23, 1836, that the advance guard of Santa Anna’s Army of Operations reached Béxar (San Antonio). In The Alamo, William Travis and Jim Bowie had not expected the Mexican troops to arrive until the middle of March. Santa Anna sent forth an emissary to demand the surrender of The Alamo "at discretion," i.e. without any agreement regarding how the defenders of The Alamo would be treated were they to surrender.
