Tenure! 🎓 Yesterday I accepted an offer to join the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) as a tenured professor "première classe" at the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. As some of you know, this was a long journey for me after MIT rejected my tenure case in 2018. But as is often the case, bad events make good lessons and great stories. Tenure is an institution supposed to provide intellectual freedom and independence. It was introduced in the United States early in the 20th century to counteract the arbitrary dismissal of professors with unpopular views. While it is debatable if that is still the case, what I came here to say is that not getting tenure can also have a positive effect on you (once you overcome the blow of failing a seven-year-long job interview). Not getting tenure forces you to define your own freedom and independence. It is not easy. Financially, I had to learn to make ends meet without relying on an academic salary. I was lucky to have started a company in 2013 that is stronger today than five years ago. Intellectually, I had to revalidate my work, by executing a new pipeline of papers and projects. The result is that today, I engage in academic work, not because I have to, but because I want to. I work on papers not because they pay the bills, but because I am honestly interested in the questions I am exploring, and that is an independence that is different from the one provided by tenure. But of course, I am still ecstatic to join TSE's Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. It's a unique and multidisciplinary department home to psychologists, anthropologists, political scientists, economists, mathematicians, and now, a physicist with twenty years of experience in questions of economic geography, knowledge diffusion, and economic development. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. Here's to new beginnings, continued exploration, and the pursuit of knowledge! 🌟
