Do you know about progressive myopia in the young adult? We were taught that myopia usually stabilises by 16–18 years of age, roughly coinciding with completion of overall bodily growth. For years, that held true in routine clinical practice. That pattern has been clearly changing nowadays. Increasingly, we are seeing progressive myopia well into the 20s, even in otherwise healthy young adults. Unfortunately it is no longer an exception and is becoming commoner by the day. One major factor is the nature of modern visual demand. Prolonged near work, sustained screen exposure, reduced outdoor time and minimal distance viewing place a continuous accommodative and visual load on the eye. Unlike earlier generations, this exposure is daily, prolonged and often uninterrupted and unhinged. The human body does not exist in isolation from behaviour. While axial growth was once thought to largely plateau after adolescence, current lifestyles appear to be extending the window during which myopia can progress. Clinically, this matters a lot! Progressive myopia in the 20s increases lifetime myopic burden and, by extension, the risk of future complications such as myopic maculopathy, retinal degeneration, retinal detachment and glaucoma. It also challenges the assumption that young adults no longer require monitoring for progression. The timeline has changed. @fyqah112 I’ll give it a try In this picture the iris’ color is different than the other eye. And the lower medial punctum is displaced superio-laterally? Since you mentioned it is unilateral in his son this is probably the affected eye
