How I Plan to Become an AI Engineer in 8 Months (My Personal Roadmap in 2026) AI Engineering is now one of the most sought-after skills in tech. Salaries in Big Tech can reach $300K+ a year. But most people are confused about where to start. I'm currently working on this roadmap myself. It's not just theory, but a step-by-step guide to building my skills from scratch to being able to create truly useful AI applications. Here's a condensed version of my roadmap: Months 1-2: Build a Strong Foundation (SALT) Python, Git, Terminal, API, FastAPI, and basic databases. Without a solid software engineering foundation, it's difficult to advance to AI. Month 3: Controlled Intelligence Learn about calling LLM (OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face), effective prompting, structured output, tool calling, and streaming response. Month 4: Intelligent Systems (RAG) Create AI that can answer questions from your own documents—embeddings, chunking, vector databases, reranking, and citations. Month 5: Agents & Workflows Build agents that can make decisions independently, multi-step workflows, state management, and evaluation (evals) for reliable results. Months 6-7: Production & Scaling Docker, deployment, background jobs, observability (LangSmith/Langfuse), cost control, caching, and security. Month 8: Specialization & Portfolio Choose a path (Product Engineer, Applied LLM, or Automation), build 4-5 real-world projects, deploy them, and be ready to apply for work/freelance positions. Conclusion from my experience: You don't need to be an expert in everything. The important thing is being able to deliver AI applications that solve real-world problems. Consistency of 2-3 hours a day is far more important than studying like crazy. I believe that within 8 months, anyone who is serious can reach a marketable level.
