I remember my high school’s teacher strike fondly. It lasted 21 days, and because nobody was telling us anything or talking to us, we spent that time putting together an unauthorized issue of the school paper that we handed out when kids came back.

This fire appears to be burning right at Cottonwood Canyon, just across the river from the state park campground. It's not super clear, but it sounds like fire is staying up on the hills and skirting the southern end of the park.

@RogueDew Of the cities included here, Dayton’s numbers seemed to be the closest to Portland’s.

@HaleJamesB I don’t get the comparison to Dayton - maybe it feels like an “average city” but Dayton was hit hard by the opioid crisis & had extremely high overdose rates just a few years ago. Dayton has done amazing life saving work to reduce the deaths, but it’s an odd reference point.

This animation shows that the wildfire smoke will be moving eastward over the Cascades and out of the area today as onshore flow increases. Anyone else happy about that? We certainly are! :) #orwx #wawx

Don't want to assume any intention here, but this does play into the misguided "parks are only getting more crowded!" narrative.

Eh, this is a weird way to frame the data. Yellowstone says it's not comparing visitor counts to '20 and '21 because of COVID, essentially ignoring the record crowds in July 2021. The news release also says '22 doesn't count (floods), but here they note the increase.
Yellowstone National Park@YellowstoneNPS

(News Release) Yellowstone National Park hosted 969,692 recreation visits in July 2023. This is a 63% increase from July 2022 (596,562 recreational visits) and a 4% increase from July 2019* (936,062 recreation visits). Learn more: nps.gov/yell/learn/new…
