Japanese jockey Kota Washizu has announced his retirement from race riding after five seasons in the Japan Racing Association (JRA). Washizu rode in 1,034 JRA races, recording 34 wins, including three victories over jumps. He belonged to the same rookie class as Seina Imamura and Daisuke Sasaki, two of Japan’s better-known young jockeys. Rather than leaving racing altogether, Washizu will begin a new chapter as an assistant trainer in the stable of Yuichi Fukunaga, the former champion jockey who has since established himself as a trainer. Wishing him every success in the next stage of his career.

One of the biggest highlights of Japan’s Select Sale 2026 was the colt by Equinox out of Daring Tact, combining two of Japan’s most accomplished modern racehorses. The bidding opened at ¥60 million and quickly escalated past ¥300 million, with ANIMAL Racing securing the colt for ¥330 million (before tax), drawing loud applause from the sales ring. The mating is especially notable: Daring Tact retired undefeated after completing the Japanese Fillies’ Triple Crown, while Equinox established himself as one of the world’s highest-rated racehorses before beginning his stud career. The first yearling by Justin Milano to enter the sales ring made an immediate impression. At the 2026 Select Sale, the colt out of Queen Bee II sold for ¥115 million (approximately US$770,000), comfortably surpassing the ¥100 million mark. It is a truly exceptional pedigree: Daring Tact retired unbeaten after sweeping Japan’s Triple Tiara, while Equinox won six G1 races and was crowned the 2023 Longines World’s Best Racehorse. Between them, the pair captured nine G1 victories. Breeder Okada Stud admitted they had hoped the colt might bring around ¥100 million, making the final price a pleasant surprise. An emotional purchase at the 2026 Select Sale. The first yearling by Do Deuce to enter the ring, the colt out of Citadelle Rio, was sold for ¥96 million. The buyer, Junko Kondo of the well-known Admire ownership group, revealed that the colt will join the stable of Yasuo Tomomichi, the trainer who guided Do Deuce to five G1 victories. “I want to continue the dream with a son of Do Deuce under Tomomichi-sensei.” The colt’s dam, Citadelle Rio, is an Argentine G1 winner, giving him an international pedigree to match one of Japan’s most celebrated modern champions. It’s a fitting first chapter to Do Deuce’s career as a stallion.

At the 2026 Select Sale, the colt out of Sinadiriya (Lot 310) sold for ¥96 million and is expected to join the stable of Yasuo Tomomichi, who also trained Do Deuce. The buyer, Junko Kondo of the well-known Admire ownership group, said she hopes to “continue the dream with this colt” by sending him to Tomomichi. Trainer Yasuo Tomomichi also noted that the youngster already reminds him of his famous sire, commenting that his way of walking, topline, and overall silhouette bear similarities to Do Deuce.
