one of the best female leads I have read abt recently

So for me personally when every other character is actively chasing after their goals a reactive character gave him less complexity and less meaningful impact. His characterization is told never fully shown. (keyword: fully)

this is not me saying xiao li isn't an interesting character btw. He is well written BUT the story has many characters with more active agency, xiao li’s character is very reactive in the sense that his motivation is often always in reaction to other peoples not an innate urge

than any other character's. Reading her calculations, and her strategies, was the most intriguing part of the book for me. As for xiao li, I don't have much of an opinion. He's not one-dimensional which yay, but his motivations felt shallow in comparison.

I also appreciated that the ending is unconventional and new for me. It was bittersweet, but it was fitting.
Overall, it was a fun read even if it took me like 2 months to finish 😭😭

it landed with real weight that was brilliantly written.
For me, this book is undeniably wen yu’s story. It's about gui luan, the return of the luan bird. And as I interpret it, the luan is Wen Yu.

okay so i am done with this and here are my thoughts about the book!!!
I think this book is a brilliant demonstration of how well political intrigue can carry a novel. what made it so compelling for me was wen yu. She is fascinating, calculating, and utterly determined.

I look forward to see how they change the misogyny, and lu zhuo’s character in the show tbh bcoz rereading parts of the og novel is like hell for me.
