#Virudhunagar: Malli Police on Tuesday detained 17 members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) after they attempted to stage a protest in connection with the suicide of #Solai Rani, a second year student of a private college near #Sivakasi. The SFI condemned the decision to reopen the college before any action was taken in the case and demanded action against the college Principal and justice for the deceased. (Solai Rani died by suicide on January 20, allegedly following mental distress after she and her mother were reprimanded by the college principal for a photograph the student had taken with her male senior outside the college premises.) A 19-year-old student studying in a private college in #Sivakasi died by suicide. The incident came to light on Friday when over 500 students and members of the #SFI staged a protest condemning the college management and demanding action against those responsible. According to the source, a photograph of the woman with a senior male student taken outside the college premises was brought to her attention. They then reprimanded the student and her mother for it. Following preliminary investigation, it was revealed that a peon in the college office, identified as Manimaran, was the one who allegedly showed the photograph in question to the authorities. He is now placed under suspension. Further, the college principal has been told not to report to college until further notice. Officials from the higher education department are set to initiate a detailed inquiry into the incident. A police officer said that based on the report submitted by the higher education department and further investigation, action would be taken.

#Triggerwarning: (#Suicide) #Virudhunagar P #Solairani (19), a student of a private college near #Sivakasi, died by suicide on Tuesday night, allegedly after the principal reprimanded her and her mother over a photograph of the student with a senior male student, taken outside the college premises and posted on social media, was brought to his attention. Condemning the incident, the college students along with members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest on Friday, demanding strict action against those responsible. Following a preliminary inquiry, Manimaran, a peon in the college office who allegedly showed the photograph, was suspended, while the principal was temporarily directed not to attend the college until further notice. Meanwhile, officials from the Higher Education Department, who visited the college, are set to begin a detailed inquiry into the incident. Police said that based on the department's report and further investigation, the sections of law may be altered from suicide and appropriate legal action would be initiated. #Virudhunagar: #FoodSafety Department inspected 4,415 high-risk food business establishments, including street food shops across the district during the 2025-26 financial year and licences of 40 shops (excluding tobacco-selling outlets) were temporarily suspended after irregularities were detected. The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday informed the Lok Sabha that 338 Indian #fishermen are currently imprisoned across various countries including Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq as of November 27, 2025.
