Head of a big drinks PR firm, w brand & region clients, just told me his firm pays $25k/year to an influential wine magazine. I asked why; he said “to ensure our clients’ wines are reviewed” & “poorly reviewed wines aren’t listed”-in case anyone wonders how wine criticism goes
@harveywine Right here. You were so adamant about naming culprits and insisting this was all just "talking shit." I to make sure you read the followup. How do you feel about publishers topping off critics' scores after the fact? Or about industry paying for previews?
@boozecolumnist Hat-tip for exposing your personal experience with Vinous (although a response from Galloni seems to be missing). By saying they all do it, aren’t you also tarring those do not commuting such sins?
@harveywine Maybe your old magazine hasn’t kept with the times and is hemorrhaging readers and has decided to stop the bleeding by taking $$ from the other side. It happens.
@boozecolumnist I was walking my daughter’s dog and doing some errands. Just responded to your post Re allegations. They’re not true. In my tenure I was never told which wines to review or not.
@boozecolumnist Allegation not true. Tasting slots for all regions were limited so tasters could devote proper attention to the wines. Still reviewed north of 18K per year. There was never any quid pro quo with marketing boards.
@harveywine Ok, how about your former magazine capping the number of a certain country’s wines they review because their marketing board doesn’t advertise? That’s allegation I heard. Is it true or not?
This was a fun project, exploring what makes one of today’s Australian wine icons what it is. Lots of inside stuff for wine freaks. twohandswines.com/our-story/podc…
