On my way from an exciting holiday in Zambia I had an unpleasant experience with a Zambian Police Assistant Inspector along the Chirundu Highway who wanted to robe us in broad daylight. He flagged us down 15 km from the border and without explaining any charge demanded that we turn the car back and drive to Lusaka. We asked what the issue was but he couldn't explain and yet demanded 1000 Kwacha if he would leave us. We refused, gave him my passport and will be making a formal charge against him to Zambia Police Service. Bellarmine is a very lucky young man such that today he gets another chance at life. He should indeed be thankful because ED has been very generous to their family after all that he endured at their hands. More fundamentally, will there be a genuinely free election in 2028 or 2030 or will we be back to the ZANU PF default mode? Second: CAB3 is enacted and ED extends his own tenure to 2030. If ED then extends Chiwenga’s vice‑presidential term to 2030 as well, will Chiwenga accept such extension? Facing these questions honestly helps explain why so much is in flux. Remember: life sometimes presents dilemmas that even fiction writers struggle to imagine. If you are not getting paid to take a position or to publicly push a narrative, you’ll always have a lot to think about. The morning after is always far more important than the day of merrymaking.

#ShantyTownShangani Drove through Shangani, that small outpost about 100km along the highway from Bulawayo, and I won’t lie, it left me uneasy. What should be a quiet stopover is slowly slipping into a shanty sprawl, the kind you associate with South Africa’s informal settlements. You can see it happening in real time, structures going up with no planning, no services, no sense that anyone is stepping in to manage it. If this continues unchecked, it’s not hard to imagine it heading down the same path as places like Kibera in Kenya .That’s not a road Zimbabwe should be walking. And you don’t even need to stretch your imagination to see the risks. Sanitation looks shaky, infrastructure is thin, and that’s exactly the kind of environment where disease thrives. Cholera doesn’t need an invitation. What really struck me though, almost jarringly, is that right next to these shanties there’s a new housing development taking shape, proper homes, structured, planned. Two completely different futures sitting side by side. Shangani has history, it has identity, and it sits in territory tied to the legend JR Goddard, “Jabula Kupela.” With the right attention, this place could easily be cleaned up and turned into a tidy, welcoming stopover. It wouldn’t take much, just intent, coordination, and a bit of pride in the place.
