Trump has proposed a $1.5 trillion defense budget, nearly doubling last year’s defense budget of $839 billion. You know what that money could do instead? Provide healthcare for every uninsured American. Housing for every homeless veteran. Childcare, Pell Grants, high speed rail—all of it.

Not sure if she's aware but of all the countries to mention Japan is probably the least helpful to her cause. Babies born in Japan can only become citizens if they have Japanese blood and are born to registered Japanese citizens whose names appear in a special book. One of my sisters was born in Japan and lived there until she was five but was not granted citizenship because our parents were "gaijin" - foreigners. And nobody minded because those were the rules.

No where in my posts am I advocating that others should make immigration and citizenship decisions for the sovereign citizens of Japan through their democratically elected leaders. They can continue to choose a closed society with very limited immigration and sub-replacement level birth rates. The fact still stands that without importing people or raising their birth rates, their society/country will slide into decline.

They could also rape the shit out of their women if they chose. As harsh as it is, they have options. Leave those people alone to figure it out. That's the whole point. If they want to survive bad enough, they can do so. On their own as they are. If they don't want to survive bad enough, they will die off with dignity.

It’s tangential to the topic of citizenship. A closed society tends to have restrictive citizenship, which can go hand in hand with population decline and eventual social decay. If a country doesn’t have birth rates that replace themselves, their only options are immigration or eventual decline. Or somehow encourage more births via public policy. Immigration and citizenship are linked, hence my post. Holding up Japan as some sort of model for citizenship and immigration policy ignores the fact they are dying off.
