Oh, well isn’t this just adorable. Here we have a January 6 defendant attempting to paint herself as a freedom fighter, drawing some baffling equivalence between the American judicial system and the Russian gulags. Yes, @JaliseMiddleton, because we all know trying to hang your own vice president and storming the Capitol to overturn a democratic election is basically the same as the systematic torture and starvation of political prisoners in Soviet labor camps. Absolutely airtight logic there. Let me guess, next she’s going to compare herself to Nelson Mandela because nothing screams “defender of democracy” like ransacking government offices while wearing a QAnon hoodie. Here’s a fun fact: coups and insurrections aren’t exactly protected by the First Amendment, love. You don’t get to claim “free speech” when your plan involves zip ties and gallows. That’s not how it works. But sure, why not throw in Tiananmen Square for good measure? Because of course, the brave souls who stood in front of tanks for the sake of actual freedom are exactly like you, knocking over desks and waving Confederate flags because you didn’t like how the election turned out. The only thing this woman’s fighting for is the right to not face consequences for sedition, and now she’s clutching her pearls because the system’s functioning like it’s supposed to. Lady, when you try to hang the VP, overthrow the government, and make a mockery of democracy, your sentence isn’t “overcharging.” It’s called justice. The fact that you’re even able to write this self-pitying drivel from the comfort of your cell instead of rotting in an unmarked grave is proof enough that no one’s treating you like a gulag prisoner.

Ahead of her sentencing today, Jan 6 defendant Jalise Middleton writes to judge.. including this passage: "It will be harder to convince the world that we are any different than Russia with the infamous Russian gulags if we continue to overcharge, and over sentence our own American citizens and leave them in poor living conditions for extended periods of time. It will be much harder to convince the world that we are any different than China when they attacked their own people at Tiananmen Square..."
