The link between repeated head injuries and what we now call CTE was first made in 1928. Pathologist Harrison Martland described "punch-drunk syndrome" in boxers, attributing their tremors, confusion, and cognitive decline to cumulative head trauma from fights. The term "chronic traumatic encephalopathy" (CTE) was introduced in 1949 by neurologist Macdonald Critchley, again for boxers. It was later identified in American football in 2005 by Bennet Omalu in NFL player Mike Webster's brain autopsy. Relevant to rugby safety discussions!

Rugby player Ian Tucker - who died in 1996 at 23 - revealed as Australia’s first diagnosed case of #CTE. Brain study was published anonymously in 1999. Turns out he died of second-impact syndrome playing for Oxford. Had a #concussion ten days earlier. theaustralian.com.au/sport/rugby-un…
