This Fall, we partnered with @CCPedu to lead a free, six-week certificate program, Community Journalism as a Civic Power. We just compiled all of the exercises and materials we used in the workshop series for anyone to use and adapt here: docs.google.com/document/d/1hs…

I'm biased, sure. But you want to read this. Genuinely brilliant. Out today: amazon.com/Four-Thousand-…

Journalism + Design worked with El Timpano to use a systems approach to covering overcrowded housing in Oakland niemanlab.org/2021/05/how-sy…

@emilybell mostly, though, don't you just think of her escaping that fire on Richard Branson's private island? must have been very scarring
English

@heatherchaplin It’s impossible for me to know...you all sound the same.....
English

@emilybell well, actually, the philly accent and the baltimore accent are very similar. so in this case, if you mean me and La Winslet, you are not wrong
English

@emilybell she nails the accent though. impressed by that.
English

@heatherchaplin .....there’s definitely a ‘works for winslet’ thing going on ....

Great to see our systems thinking tools getting put to work, in this case with El Tímpano around overcrowded housing and health in Oakland’s Latino and Mayan immigrant communities : medium.com/el-t%C3%ADmpan… go @colegoins @madbair

@nikkiusher @carlamurphy @meredithdclark @JosephATorres I did not know the book or the history that's in it either. Then one day a couple of years ago a student asked me where the Black people were in the history I was teaching. I realized I didn't know. Now I know more. It's just basic american history.
English

@heatherchaplin @carlamurphy @meredithdclark @JosephATorres I need to order that and why is the first time I am hearing about this. So much to learn.
English

I hope @meredithdclark and @carlamurphy and calls for reparations for media can make criminal justice journalism a beat vs the COPS beat. This has to be an extra institutional reform. Not happening within news

Dear journalists, if you had a source that blatantly lied to you as often as police departments do, would you continue uncritically publishing their accounts of events? Didn't think so.
English

@carlamurphy @nikkiusher @meredithdclark @JosephATorres this was something I put together last year on this topic wickedproblemtaskforce.com/american-newsp…
English

@carlamurphy @nikkiusher @meredithdclark Funny you should mention! I teach history of journalism. And it is *key.* Shout out to @JosephATorres for News for All the People, which addresses much of journalism's ignored history.
English

@carlamurphy @nikkiusher @meredithdclark That is absolutely true - w that newsroom I mentioned, it was v striking how much interest in doing things differently there was - but at end of day is it possible as overstretched as they already are?
English

@meredithdclark @carlamurphy @nikkiusher Agreed - the issues are deep and systemic. What allowed the reporters we worked with to see what they were doing was building a big systems map of what they thought "crime" was :)
English

@heatherchaplin @carlamurphy @nikkiusher There are also so many systemic issues that must be addressed in order for this to work. Top of mind: Investigations into union regulations and contracts.
The public should know how LE is structured *long* before a problem arises.
English

@carlamurphy @nikkiusher @meredithdclark > of course as @carlamurphy says, then you get to the cost of doing good reporting. Personally, I thought they should taken their "Crime" budget and started a white collar crime unit. but don't know how that went down...
English

@carlamurphy @nikkiusher @meredithdclark < then, their process was: get a quote from the police. After, they decided after to start including quotes from community. My point is not, oh they're idiots, but just they hadn't *challenged the process* they inherited. When they saw what they were doing, they tried to >
