Mycenaean (Koukonaries, Greece 1163 BCE) result on the Modern Genetic Proximity Heatmap. max distance = 0.10

Funnily enough, despite being more Balkan-shifted, the average of those three corners actually captures fewer Turks than using Austria as the center. Fair point though: you picked a concrete, existing population. Mine is an abstract geodesic centroid. Still, I'd go with Basque_Labourd as the european-most. And Romanian_Transylvania as core European, controversial as it may sound.😆

I'd disagree on that in the sense that Europe is more ethno-political than a landmass division. I can't speak for Greek Cypriots, of course. I'm just using them as a modern proxy for an archaic population that I consider fundamental to what we understand as Europe today. Also, the average of those three triangle corners doesn't fall that far from Austrians, look (no sims):

I created an average sample based on the weighted population of each european country without counting immigrants, the result gave something near Austrian_Burgenland
Thing is that most mixes in Europe between North and South give something near Austria.
So using the country as a reference, you have the peripherical countries like Spain and Russia at the same distance.
I just think that when using Austria and a 0.15 distance, we can include Cyprus, Sardinia and Latvia inside (since they are culturally and geographically european, althought Cyprus is actually in Asia)

@47Tolkien + I bet Thales of Miletus, founder of western Philosophy tradition, being from Ionia, would plot just like a modern Greek Cypriot.

English

An arbitrary cutoff, but not a meaningless one. Plot European populations on a PCA and they form a near-perfect triangle: Basques, Greek Cypriots, and Latvians at the three corners. Latvians are the closest people alive to WHGs, Greek Cypriots carry the ancestry of the civilizations that built the classical world. And Basques occupy the vertex furthest from everything else simultaneously
