Royalties. Royalties. Royalties. Twitter is up in arms about residuals. And that's fine. But most times, we want things without doing the research on how those things actually work. Nollywood has a distribution problem. So how do residuals enter the conversation when producers are still struggling to recoup their initial investment? Yes, filmmaking is collaborative output-wise. It is not collaborative investment-wise. Producers carry the risk. Talent and crew get paid, do their jobs, and go home. Producers are left to sell the film. When it fails, nobody is sharing that loss with them. Only the wins attract the crowd. @jadeosiberu spoke about how her mum put up her house as collateral to finance a film. That's a risk that teammates might not be willing to partake in. So, of course, we all want residuals, but we need to fix distribution first. Demand has to equal purchasing power. We need to be able to sell to other territories. When the money is there, the conversation about residuals becomes a real one. And for the non-industry people jumping into this debate, here is how you can actually help right now: stop watching films on Telegram. Most of you watched BTS from there, Free of charge. Stop using your boyfriend's Netflix password. Get your own subscription. Go to the cinema and watch Nollywood films. Attendance has dropped by 1million. In a country of over 200 million people, only 3million or so people watched Nollywood films last year. (I Stand corrected) Residuals are a worthy goal. But to get there, we need to first build a viable value chain that actually delivers results. Fix the foundation. The rest will follow.

It’s really insane that at 24, I get to be the Youngest Producer-Director in Nollywood’s History to ever have a Nationwide Cinema Release. 🥺🤯 Up GEN-Z🤌✨ Today at the Nile Cinecon, I performed a monologue from the movie and got an ovation from the room. Bucci Franklin; someone who I am in complete awe of, said he’s been a fan of mine from Hijack ‘93 and gave me some great acting tips and encouragement. ❗️THE BOY WHO GAVE is coming to ALL CINEMAS NATIONWIDE❗️ This is UNBELIEVABLE! Thank You Jesus! 🙏 #AllisonTheLight
