Farming vs Positioning: The Mindset That Determines Who Wins in Web3 Spend enough time in Web3 and you’ll start to notice something. Two people can join the same project at the same time… But months later, their outcomes are completely different. One leaves with nothing. The other builds real advantage. Why? It usually comes down to one thing: Mindset. The Farming Mindset Most people enter Web3 with what I’d call a farming mindset. They look for: • tasks to complete • airdrops to claim • quick rewards • the next opportunity They move fast. Join early. Do the tasks. Wait for rewards. Move on. On the surface, this seems smart. But there’s a problem. This approach is built entirely around short-term extraction. There’s no real connection to the project. No deeper understanding. No meaningful contribution. And because of that, the value they get is usually limited. The Positioning Mindset Then there’s a different group of people. They don’t just ask: “What can I get from this project?” They ask: “What is this project trying to build — and how do I fit into it?” These are people who: • take time to understand the idea • share their thoughts publicly • contribute to discussions • help others learn • stay even when there’s no immediate reward They are not just farming. They are positioning. The Difference Shows Over Time At the beginning, both groups look similar. They’re all early. They’re all participating. But over time, something changes. Farmers: • lose interest quickly • move to the next opportunity • disappear when incentives slow down Positioners: • build reputation • become known in the community • gain trust and visibility • naturally benefit as the ecosystem grows The difference is not immediate. But it becomes very clear over time. Why This Matters More in the AI Era This conversation becomes even more important when we look at where the internet is heading. AI systems are now capable of generating: • content • threads • opinions • interactions At scale. This means the internet will soon be filled with noise. When that happens, something becomes incredibly valuable: Authentic human signal. Not just activity. Not just output. But real participation from real people. But it is already starting. And the people who recognize it early will be in a much stronger position.
