For a psychology course at the University Oklahoma, Samantha Fulnecky was asked to write a 650-word essay reacting to an article about how people are perceived based on societal expectations of gender. In her essay, Fulnecky argued that traditional gender roles should not be considered stereotypes. She cited the Bible to support her stance that eliminating gender in society would be "detrimental" because that would put people "farther from God's original plan for humans." She received zero points out of 25 on the essay. Transgender professor, Mel Curtis, said Ms. Fulnecky, failed to use empirical evidence/and called parts of her essay offensive. "To call an entire group of people 'demonic' is highly offensive, especially a minoritized population," the instructor wrote in the online grading platform. Fulnecky says she followed the assignment guidelines and should not be penalized for her religious viewpoints. OU officials point to the formal grade-appeal process as the student awaits a decision. We at Turning Point OU stand with Samantha. We should not be letting mentally ill professors around students. Clearly this professor lacks the intellectual maturity to set her own bias aside and take grading seriously. Professors like this are the very reason conservatives can't voice their beliefs in the classroom. Not true. Threatening the life of the president is a crime. Other than that, threatening someone is coveveref under free speech, and doesn’t get people arrested. Ask anyone who has ever been threatened in a domestic violence situation where there’s even been a recorded history of violence. Ask anyone attempting to get a restraining order. Ask a cop who shows up to any situation in which someone is saying “That person over is threatening me!”. Also, look up the case “Brandenburg vs Ohio” which went to the Supreme Court in 1968. KKK leader Brandenburg was found not guilty of violating the 1st amendment. As you can imagine, the things he said were and are considered to be unspeakably horrible to most of us, and definitely included threatening speech about African Americans and Jews. The 1968 determination by the Supreme Court not only overturned a few previous cases, but set the precedent which is adhered to today. A good thing for ALL of us to remember, is that as much as you hate someone, their speech is protected, same as yours. The 1st Amendment is the 1st Amendment for a reason.
