10 Harsh Truths Most People Learn Too Late
One of the oldest observations in psychology is that real growth rarely comes from comfort. It comes from facing truths we’d rather avoid.
The ancient Stoics called it premeditatio malorum ,the deliberate practice of thinking about life’s difficulties before they arrive. Modern psychology simply calls it acceptance.
Here’s a simple but brutal test you can run on yourself:
Sit quietly for a moment and reflect on these ten realities. Not as motivational quotes, but as cold, unchanging facts of human existence.
The 10 Truths
1. Your parents won’t be around forever.
2. The people you love most will hurt you , sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.
3. Friends can become strangers faster than you expect.
4. Family and money shape our lives far more than we like to admit.
5. Life doesn’t get easier , you simply get stronger.
6. Heartbreak and failure are not interruptions; they are part of the journey.
7. No one cares about your excuses , only your results.
8. Real success almost always demands sacrificing comfort.
9. There’s no place like home… until you lose it.
10. You are not entitled to anything in this world. You have to earn it.
Nothing changes about the world when you accept these truths.
What changes is you.
Why These Truths Hit So Deep
These aren’t new ideas. They echo through centuries of psychological wisdom:
The Stoic emphasis on impermanence (everything is temporary).
Freud’s recognition of ambivalence in close relationships.
The modern concept of radical acceptance in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Each point carries its own psychological weight:
Your parents’ mortality teaches attachment and grief.
The inevitable hurts from loved ones reveal the painful truth of human imperfection and the limits of idealization.
Friends turning into strangers demonstrates the fluidity of social bonds.
The hidden weight of family and money exposes how much our denial of material and tribal realities costs us in self-deception.
“Life doesn’t get easier, only you get stronger” is the principle of post-traumatic growth.
Heartbreak and failure are the raw material of resilience , what Nietzsche meant when he said what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
No one cares about excuses is the difference between external and internal locus of control
Success requiring sacrifice of comfort reflects the trade-off between immediate gratification and long-term fulfillment
Losing home reminds us of the deep evolutionary need for belonging and security
The final truth , you’re not entitled to anything , strikes at the heart of entitlement psychology and the dangerous illusion of the “just world” belief.
These harsh truths are not meant to depress you.
They are meant to free you.
When you stop fighting reality and start accepting it, something powerful shifts. You waste less energy on denial, anger, or bargaining. You begin to build real strength, real gratitude, and real self-reliance.
The next time life feels unfair or overwhelming, come back to this list. Not to feel sorry for yourself, but to remember: this is how life has always worked.
The sooner you internalize these truths, the sooner you stop being surprised by them, and the sooner you start becoming the kind of person who can carry them with quiet strength.
Because in the end, maturity isn’t about avoiding these harsh realities.
It’s about learning to walk with them.

Africa is building the future 🌍
From Lagos to Nairobi, Accra to Cape Town, a new generation of builders is reimagining what innovation looks like, grounded in creativity, community, and real-world impact.
That spirit came alive at @blockfestafrica, where I had the opportunity to represent @domaprotocol. I shared how Doma’s DomainFi vision is bridging digital identity and on-chain utility, turning domains into tokenized assets that empower users to truly own a piece of the internet.
Big shoutout to the organizers, speakers, and the amazing community that made it all worthwhile. 🙌
Here’s a glimpse of the experience 👇
