It was also a great joy to share an evening with the leaders who once carried the mantle at RENU. Our former CEOs and Board members played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation, guiding it through defining moments, driving growth, strengthening partnerships, and anchoring it in a clear sense of purpose. From left to right, Raphael Aregu from Mountains of the Moon University (@MMU_Uganda), Dr. Fredrick Francis Tusubira, Eng.Isaac Kasana (former RENU CEO), Prof. Michel Lejeune, Dr. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo (Vice Chancellor of @Equsat_Ug ), Dr. Maxwell Otim Onapa and Mr. George Apuke. The progress we continue to make today is built on the direction they helped set. We celebrate not only their service, but their continued connection and unwavering belief in RENU’s mission. #RENUAT20

Last evening, I joined Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU) community in celebrating 20 years of transforming education and research through connectivity. What started as a bold vision to make internet access affordable for our universities has grown into a cornerstone of Uganda’s digital transformation. I witnessed its foundation in 2006 while serving on @Makerere University Council committee of ICT when the then ICT Director Dr. Francis Tusubira presented the idea to the university council aimed at solving the high cost and unreliability of internet services to universities. The aim was to form a consortium of universities and research institutions who would buy bulk internet directly from international suppliers at a fraction of what was being charged to them. I’m glad now they provide high-speed internet connectivity and affordable ICT solutions to universities, research institutions, schools, colleges, hospitals, and the broader research & education community in Uganda with over 1000 connected campuses and sites. From enabling collaboration among institutions to supporting e-learning, research, and innovation, RENU has proven that when we work together, we unlock limitless possibilities. The impact is real; students accessing global knowledge, researchers collaborating across borders and institutions delivering better services. As we look ahead, the focus must shift to maximising this infrastructure, embracing AI, strengthening research, and ensuring every learner and institution benefits, regardless of location. Government remains committed to supporting policies and partnerships that drive digital inclusion and innovation. Together, we can build a knowledge-driven economy that positions Uganda competitively on the global stage. Congratulations to the board, partners and all stakeholders on this milestone. The journey continues.

Overcoming the First Barriers   The early days of RENU were not easy.   The story of RENU is a story of faith and perseverance to actualize the ending of extreme isolation of Uganda's researchers and higher education practitioners from their national, regional and global peers.   Rooted in the spirit of Ubuntu (the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity), RENU’s founding visionaries, Eng. Isaac Kasana and Eng. Dr. F. F. Tusubira (Tusu), reflect on the real challenges that shaped the journey: 1.Near insolvency  2.Unpaid staff salaries for many years 3.Limited funding for critical network infrastructure 4.A shortage of skilled network and systems engineers Yet, the vision never wavered.   With the support of partners like the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) and others, solutions began to emerge, and a foundation was laid for what RENU is today.

Every great journey begins with a “why.” As we reflect on 20 years of RENU, we return to the question that sparked it all: Why was RENU established? In the first episode of our history series, we revisit the challenge our founders set out to resolve at the time. Dr. Eng. F. F. Tusubira, one of RENU’s founding visionaries, shares the original problem and the purpose that gave birth to RENU. 20 Years. So Much to Celebrate! 🥳🎉 #RENUAT20 @Makerere @UbuntuNet @kyambogou @Muni_University @Educ_SportsUg @MoICT_Ug @GEANTnews @WACREN @ASRENorg @tenetnews @Maren_net @ZambiaRen @nordunet @DFN_de @nsrcworld @UCUniversity

RENU at the @NCHEuganda Education Week We are proud to participate in the National Council for Higher Education Conference and Exhibition 2026, happening from 23rd to 28th March 2026 under the theme “Harnessing Innovations in Higher Education for Accelerated Economic Transformation.” This year’s conference brought together academia, policymakers, and technology partners to explore how higher education can evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing digital world. The focus was on building resilient, technology driven institutions that can expand access, enhance research collaboration, and deliver flexible learning beyond traditional classrooms. As a strategic partner of NCHE, we continue to play a central role in enabling this transformation through providing high-quality services and products to support research and education initiatives. To learn more about RENU, visit renu.ac.ug. The exhibition is still ongoing and at our booth, we are demonstrating how institutions can transition from basic connectivity to fully integrated digital ecosystems that support hybrid learning, cross border research, data driven decision making, and inclusive access for all learners. Join us and be part of the conversation on what the future of higher education in Uganda and beyond should look like.
