I also think part of why people felt so "scandalized" is because the sex scenes were intimate. They weren't played for shock value or comedy, they were an important part of the story. And the actors had genuine chemistry. They didn't shy away from it looking and feeling real.

this is fine for handling the physical aspects, but i just wanted to add onto this that the biggest element of writing smut imo is the emotional part, and usually when a smut scene doesn't land, it's not because of the logistics of the movement or the sensory detail, but because

my biggest tip for writing smut is establish the action happening. then, rotate thru all 5 senses: how does it feel, how do they look, how do they sound, how do they taste (kissing), and how do they smell (perfume/if applicable) break paragraph for dialogue or action repeat
