@her_half @fakehistoryhunt They weren’t as colourfast as chemical dyes. Keep in mind that a lot of top clothing wasn’t laundered very often. If you have a pure wool garment you don’t need to wash it every few days. You hang it outside for freshening up. Undergarments we’re often linen undyed.

Just look at the colours you can make with just plants and some people still find it difficult to believe that our ancestors through the centuries wanted but also had colourful clothing, not just brown, grey drab rags.

These plant-dyed Shetland wool skeins are by Emma Kylmala. She’ll be taking them along to Make Joy tomorrow at Woolwich Works - a one-day celebration of yarn for knitters, crocheters and makers.

@her_half @fakehistoryhunt There is colourfastness to these dyes as long as the washing is gentle and appropriate. Madder, cochineal, weld and indigo are classic dyes. Textiles pre-1870s were dyed with plants/insects and some of those colourful textiles are still in museum / archive collections today.

However, I think Nevada might like a word about the articles' use of largest female legislative majority.

If everyone had better history lessons in school, the world would be a better place. Then again, I would say that wouldn't I.

@ingrid1dewaal She is in the episode! Just not in the pictures. No particular reason for that. These 6 are chosen mostly at random because pictures of all 30 or so I mentioned would make them too small to be seen. I'm glad you know about so many though! We need more visibility! 😃

Why spend all day fretting about today's election when you could spend 15 minutes of it reading/listening about elections that are safely over and the world did not end? (direct link in the bio and 1st comment)

@ingrid1dewaal Oh, it's not a complete list for sure! I'm happy to say that at this point, there have been too many women elected for me to cover them all in one episode. I mostly focused on the earlier ones.

To that woman who thinks life would be better as a historical farmwife: please read The First Four Years by Laura Ingalls Wilder. You'll see isolation, depression, debt+inability to earn, house burning down, failed harvests, etc. The cover looks cute, but the life was hard.
