How do you design a communication link where light dies every 10 meters? You don’t start with the transmitter. You start with the physics. We ran a full receiver analysis for underwater optical communication at 450nm — the kind of work that usually sits behind defense NDAs. Here’s what the numbers actually say: The problem: Water kills infrared. At 850nm (standard Li-Fi), you get 2 meters. That’s not communication — that’s a flashlight. The approach: Blue-green window. 450nm. But even there, coastal water attenuates at 0.30 m⁻¹. At 100 meters, your signal is buried in noise. So we did what most teams skip: We optimized the receiver. The results (10,000-trial Monte Carlo): → Clear ocean: 300m range at BER < 10⁻⁶ → Coastal water: 63m — enough for sub-to-ship relay → Harbor: 17m — operational for docking approach → Temperature compliance: PASS across -5°C to +40°C → Manufacturing yield: 100% at design range → Noise budget: 5 sources modeled independently (McIntyre, shot, thermal, TIA, background) No marketing slides. No “up to” ranges. Every number comes from Beer-Lambert propagation, Jerlov water classification, and real component datasheets. One principle drove the entire design: Don’t just make the transmitter louder. Make the receiver listen harder. Most optical systems throw more power at the water. We spent equal effort on a SiPM array with 45% photon detection efficiency at 450nm, a transimpedance amplifier with 4.5 nV/√Hz noise floor, and adaptive bandwidth from 1 MHz to 1 GHz depending on water conditions. The transmitter sends. The receiver decides.
