Dementia Action Week: Supporting Residents with Free Home Fire Safety Checks As part of Dementia Action Week, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging residents to check whether they, or a loved one, may be eligible for a free Home Fire Safety Check. Residents living with dementia can face increased risks in the home, particularly around cooking, electrical safety and smoking materials. NFRS is highlighting the importance of early support and practical safety measures to help people remain safe and independent in their own homes. Specially trained staff can visit eligible residents to provide tailored fire safety advice, fit smoke alarms where needed and identify potential hazards around the home. Head of Prevention at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, Helen Visocci, said “Dementia Action Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the additional fire risks that people living with dementia may face. A Home Fire Safety Check can provide reassurance not only for the individual, but also for family members and carers. We would encourage anyone who may be concerned about a loved one to get in touch and check eligibility.” Residents may be eligible for a Home Fire Safety Check if they: • Are living with dementia or memory loss • Are aged 65 or over • Have mobility issues or other health concerns • Smoke • Use oxygen equipment • Would struggle to escape quickly in an emergency During the visit, fire crews or prevention staff can: • Provide personalised fire safety advice • Fit or test smoke alarms • Discuss safer cooking practices • Identify trip or escape hazards • Offer specialist equipment or referrals where appropriate Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging families, carers, neighbours and health professionals to help spread the message during Dementia Action Week. New partner, Funding Circle, is supporting large-scale peatland restoration across our National Parks, starting here in Northumberland National Park. Peatlands may look wild and rugged, but they play a vital role in tackling climate change.
