For decades, the total was estimated at 7,107 islands, but this number rose significantly after the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) identified over 500 additional islands between 2013 and 2016 using advanced IFSAR technology. Most Filipinos reside on Luzon, the largest island, which is also home to Metro Manila.
