Been reading a lot of literature by African-American/African authors lately. Gonna start a thread and update it as I read more.

@CoraCHarrington Exactly. Because if you look at bespoke/custom tailoring, people tend to understand the value of those services, even if they can’t afford it. But they don’t understand or are being willfully ignorant about fast fashion manufacturing and labor practices.

I want to read something by a fashion and beauty culture person who talks about why the “no piece of clothing should cost more than $30” mindset isn’t applied to hair (inclusive of wigs), makeup, and similar items. I’m very interested in the thought process behind valuation there

@2Eazee The book is about the eschewing of Black voices by the industry commodifying them. And the movie made so many changes, that it seems antithetical to the book. Monk’s sister dies in the book bc she’s shot by an anti-abortion protestor. The wedding scene is not joyous at all.

@2Eazee In the book, it’s like Monk makes all of his decisions of his own accord & leaves the predominantly White establishment to react in his wake. Whereas, the movie makes it seem more of a stereotype threat/confirmation ordeal. There is a lot more class-related plot in the book, too.

@2Eazee It was interesting enough to make me read Erasure. Definitely saw it in a different (and worse) light after that.

@le_debut Some patterns come in A0 or Copy Shop size and you can have them professionally printed at a print shop. Even if they only come in US letter size, you can use PDF stitcher to join them together and print them at a print shop, too.

I have so many things I want to make over the coming months. I've been looking at free patterns online and had no idea that for sewing patterns to get them to size you have to print out a billion pages and tape them together

Friends, I took my first sewing class and had an absolute BLAST! We learned the basics of sewing machines and made drawstring bags.
