Systems failing? Hit rate dropping? Feeling confused? Tempted to jump strategy? Think it's only happening to you while everybody else kills it? Here's some home truths & tips Firstly, you are not the only one struggling, most people are and that's ok However You need to distinguish whether your system no longer has edge, or whether your system doesn't fit the environment Here's an example Trader profile I am a multi day swing trader. I excel when there's a strong trend. I am much better on the long side than shorting Recent environment Choppy market conditions, sellers in control for the last couple of months My system I wait for RSI bull divs and bullish market structure patterns The outcome RSI bull divs and market structure patterns continue to fail The why Setup hit rate reduced due to the environment, not complete system failure Where most traders go wrong They fail to recognise the nuance and convince themselves something is broken when it's not The variables All systems have failure rates statistically built in based on probabilities. However, the success or failure can be amplified by the environment What can I do if my system suddenly turns sour? Study why it's failing before writing it off completely. The good thing about trending systems is that you can invert the conditions. With that being said, some people still struggle when taking the other side The patience element A lot of people would rather say - I'm just not a patient person. Instead of trying to understand how to be patient. This is like any other muscle in your body that can be built An example Does a sniper stand on the front line in close combat? Or do they wait for the optimal time to take a shot from a distance? Treat trading the same way If you feel like you must trade or be in the action. Simulate ONE new strategy that suits your personality. Or even better, fill the empty void by being productive elsewhere. Set alerts for your system peak conditions to trigger A lot of successful traders make most of their yearly PnL during small windows They rinse the market when their edge is at its strongest, notice when their edge starts to fade, then sit back and do nothing again Instead of looking at the market and thinking. I need to make money today Ask yourself, how can I stop myself from losing money today? The simple answer to this question in most cases is to do nothing when your system is weak This is difficult to manage without writing down what you do It's near impossible to improve something that you don't track
