It was great to meet the @ECHR_CEDH President Síofra O’Leary, the first woman in that position. Thank you for our discussions on the importance of human rights and the rule of law in addressing the geopolitical challenges of today’s Europe.

A big welcome to @hhjorvar who has joined ESA as a Legal Adviser. Hildur joins us from the European Court of Human Rights where she was a Senior Lawyer. Previously, Hildur served as a Deputy to the Permanent Representative of Iceland to the Council of Europe.

Úkraína hefur kært Rússland til Mannréttindadómstóls Evrópu. Dómstóllinn hefur gripið til bráðabirgðaráðstafana vegna þessa og beint því til rússneskra stjórnvalda að beita engum hernaði gegn óbreyttum borgurum, og að tryggja öryggi hjálparstarfsfólks. hudoc.echr.coe.int/eng-press?i=00…

Um er að ræða tímabundna ráðstöfun. Þrátt fyrir hana er Rússland áfram aðili að Mannréttindasáttmála Evrópu, og geta einstaklingar því áfram leitað til Mannréttindadómstóls Evrópu vegna brota Rússlands á þeim sáttmála.

Evrópuráðið, sem staðið hefur vörð um mannréttindi, réttarríki og lýðræði í Evrópu frá lokum seinni heimsstyrjaldar, hefur afnumið rétt Rússlands til þátttöku á vegum ráðsins vegna alvarlegra brota gegn grundvallarregum þess.

Our thoughts are with the Ukranian people who are under attack. We stand by our allies in strongly condemning Russia's illegal aggression. We will partake in sanctions and I have announced today that Iceland will provide EUR 1 million to humanitarian support in Ukraine.
