Did you know that the longest #interfaith peace treaty between Muslims and Christians was signed by Nubian Christian kings and the forces of the Rashidun Caliphate in the 7th C, lasting until the mid-13th C? Learn this history & more in this fab video: youtube.com/watch?v=jKIoLw…

I love this: the Cambridge Persianist Edward Granville Browne writing to Ignaz Goldziher in Arabic rhymed prose (sajʿ). Let’s bring this back among Arabist colleagues!

My cousin Katayoon was killed by an airstrike in Tehran on Tuesday. She was a lovely, intelligent mother and physician. Her building was rocked by bombs and she was killed under the rubble. Her husband is in critical condition. This war does not discriminate. Innocent people are being killed for expansionist agendas. This war is not about freeing people or democracy. They have made it abundantly clear that the people of Iran are irrelevant to them. We are resilient people but war can kill the best of us. Pray for Iran and do what is in your power to put a stop to the bombing and the potential ground invasion that is being . Speak out, vote, protest and BDS.

Every year, Ramadan comes at a time when life feels chaotic and overwhelming. Alhamdulilah, I’m blessed to experience another beautiful month. May it be one filled with gratitude and sincerity for us all. Ramadan Kareem!

@yoncacubuk Yes, that's true, ofc. My experiece is from the US where separation of church and state is meant to protect both institutions from each other. So I try to stay as neutral and impartial as possible as I observe life here in Istanbul.

@yoncacubuk That's the terminology I heard when I moved here: secular and conservative. They're not what I would use, but it's what seems to be used🤷🏾‍♀️

@Aterrie12 @CirkinAmerika Actually, I see that a lot in public and semi-public spaces, including in Üsküdar, where a dissertation on the dating scene in Uncular Cad. is waiting to be written by an intrepid sociologist 🙃

@CirkinAmerika @HindMakki In the 90s, girls with headscarves would hang out (and do more) with their boyfriends at parks in secular neighbourhoods like Ataköy and Yeşilköy. Back then, they’d choose “safe” areas, now it’s mosque courtyards.

When I moved to Istanbul, I deleted my prayer time app. Bc the entire city is a living, breathing, echoing prayer app. Even in secular areas, you hear the azan. Surely there are other metrics that can accurately explain Turkish cultural shifts over the last two decades.
Alice Evans@_alice_evans

In Istanbul, locals are 2.4 times more likely to search for ‘Tinder’ relative to ‘prayer times’ (namaz vakitleri). Google Trends provides fascinating insights into cultural shifts! ggd.world/p/cultural-lea…

@ageandude @realNachawati Definitely, I don't look at TR with Ottoman-tinted tulip glasses as many foreign Muslims do. BTW I'm Sudanese-American and moved to Istanbul in 2022 🙃

@HindMakki @realNachawati You are correct 👍, in 🇹🇷 there are many reasons for young people for becoming less faithful, these many reasons do not exist in the United States, I can name them one by one but it would take time, by the way I am Turkish American and I moved from Michigan to Antalya 🇹🇷 in 2021

@AsadFromNYC @MonicaLMarks Exactly. A ton of ppl I know here, including those who identify as active/practicing/observant Muslims, are on dating apps. It's so boring to think there are such hard cleavages in the social lives of ppl with Muslim backgrounds.

@MonicaLMarks This has no bearing on @HindMakki's point about the utility of the metric. If the prayer time is readily known through the call to prayer then even religious Turks won't look it up, but they may still be on Tinder. The researcher is lacking in her cultural context and literacy.

This is better understood as part function—and part cause—of the negative polarisation around religiosity that AKP’s perceived pushing religion on people has helped create. AKP has a policy of reshaping the public sphere by building mosques inc in secular neighbourhoods. 1/2

@ageandude @realNachawati I'm definitely not fazed by the secularism or irreligiosity of society in TR. I'm from the US, a country where secularism protects individual freedoms. BTW, in my experience, young US Christians are much more observant in their faith than many young Turks 🤷🏾‍♀️

@realNachawati @HindMakki And the young people love malls, movies, Halloween, Christmas&Valentine’s Day more than any real Islamic events, basically they are just like their western counterparts except they speak Turkish & are born Muslims, here you have it, oh the young in Iran are even more liberal 🤷🏻‍♂️

I (and so many others) faced vitriol from fellow Dems when pointing out that the Biden-Harris Gaza policy is a disaster. 2 years and another Trump presidency later, some Dems are finally starting to publicly acknowledge this truth: Biden's Gaza policy cost them the WH.
Bhavik Lathia@bhaviklathia

@brhodes @AOC I coordinated digital strategy for Kamala Harris across every single battleground state. Guess which issue got us more backlash and demobilization from our base than any other? The genocide in Gaza that AIPAC actively aids and abets. Dems are anti-war. We can't stomach that shit.
