Day 1 of posting traditional bhajans: Bothered by the growing trend of mediocre bhajans often based on tunes of film songs, I'll try to post traditional bhajans every day until I run out of them. Nama Ramayana sankirtana- Swami Purushottamananda: youtu.be/CeZbSEKXKG4?si…

Fables of Amir khusrau being an inventor of everything from sitar, tabla to hindi have gotten out of hand. Serious scholars of these fields need to combat these widespread perceptions. Dileep Karanth's 2008 paper is a nice dissection: pragyata.com/amir-khusraus-… +GPT's comments⬇️

Muhammad Saad@saadsial060

Tabla and Sitar were invented by Hazrat Ameer Khusro so far so Tabla word comes from Arabic origin, do you recognize him as an Indian ? Or he will have to take part in Ghar Wapsi program ?

Most writings and discussions on Hindustani classical music keep rehashing popular narratives without a deeper investigation. Someone needs to take up a thorough analysis of these themes: x.com/i/status/12267…
Kushagra Aniket (कुशाग्र अनिकेत)@KushagraAniket

@Hiranyareta For example, they think that the all-popular Khayal is an invention of Adarang and Sadarang -- the darbari singers of Muhammad Shah. However, there was a pre-existing tradition of Geetika (गीतिका) in Indian music. It is still preserved in the Haveli Sangeet tradition.

Beautiful! Same tune was used three years later for Hey naam re in suhag(1979). Sung again by Asha Bhosle alongwith Md. Rafi. They've even retained the dandiya setup. I don't know much about ragas, probably the same raga is used, knowledgeable folks can comment.
Harshil (હર્ષિલ)@MehHarshil

Heard of Chhogala Tara song? #AshaBhosle ji sung it in 1976 and it was themed on Gopis waiting for Krishna for Raas. Bollywood corrupted it later.

Many hindi songs of Asha tai are being shared and discussed, here's a huge compilation of her marathi songs. My fav. is Reshamachya Reghani, written by Shanta Shelke and music composed by Anandghan(Lata Mangeshkar)- it's about a woman's love for her sari! youtu.be/tAxfLcrtOP0?si…

Everyone & their ajoba in MH knew about it, she was as open about it as possible. Problem with 'secular' folks is they don't read beyond their bubbles. Savarkar is sort of a hero in MH, even a liberal humanist like Pu la was a fan. This is from 70s/80s⬇️ youtu.be/AHqINKBwfNM?si…

@gauravsabnis It was only after 2014 that I learned that Lata was always a Savarkar bhakt. Kept it well hidden.

@Ugrashravas @ApparaoDhillon He's hinting at Neumann's involvement in the development and use of nuclear weapons- he was pretty unfazed by the resultant human suffering and was instrumental in selection of Hiroshima as a bombing target in addition to optimising the blasts.

The quality has gone down imo. Used to be so good a decade ago. Visited in feb, they were out of jolbhora, monohora was so bad, kachagolla was fine but nothing you can't get at other places. The area is so filthy & the shop has no item & price board, it's a headache ordering.

Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar was born today in 1920. Whenever he came to #Calcutta he invariably asked his friends at the airport: "Is Nakur still in business? " Nakur being the nearly 200-year-old mithai shop to the north of the city, with sweets (especially, sandesh) to die for

I grew up with "Harry Potter". It's still big in popular culture (sometimes annoyingly so). The 9 3/4 gate at Kings Cross is always packed. Even if a large part of it is nostalgia, it's interesting to ask why "HP" has that power when "Twilight", "The Hunger Games"... don't.

I've never returned to "Harry Potter" since I read them in Vietnamese as a kid, but we should ask why no children's literature in my lifetime has been as popular & successful as this series. I was there during the height of "Twilight" mania for example, nobody cares about it now.

@PriynathBenares @sangriaenjoyer Still a hindu according to shyam ranganathan, there's just no way you can escape:) a lot of the issue with these discussions is lang & definition of terms like hindu, being hindu is not exactly the same as being a muslim/xtian. Probably you can call yourself a निरीश्वरवादी hindu.

This is not right, Hinduism is not anti-women though yes it is very patriarchal, more patriarchal than Islam or Christianity anyways, it’s just that patriarchy is not anti-women. Communists & feminists are partly-right, it’s a very very patriarchal religion but not anti-women.

@ajiteshkakan @PriynathBenares Inevitable, kaliyuga progressing as expected:) But it'll continue to thrive in a small section of ppl. Where I do see a resurgence in is- interest in hindu culture- sanskrit texts, art, philosophy etc, over the past decade no. of men seriously interested in these has gone up.

People discuss Indian alcohol consumption falling after seeing some American statistics, but a trend in India that, imo, actually mirrors American statistics is that young men today are more religious than young women, definitely the case for Hindus anyways & of a certain SES…
